Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry Fraser wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca! Kerry, While the TSN panel and the rest of the hockey world is busy discussing the tying goal in last nights contest between the Sabres and Leafs, my question to you has to do with the fourth goal scored by Buffalo! After watching the replay, it appears to me that Alexander Sulzer pushed Ben Scrivens pad into the net along with the puck. Being a goalie myself, Ive always hated plays like this that result in a goal but rule 69.6 Rebounds and Loose Pucks states that: "In the event that a goalkeeper has been pushed into the net together with the puck by an attacking player after making a stop, the goal will be disallowed. If applicable, appropriate penalties will be assessed." Although my opinion may be biased based on the fact that Im a goaltender, I would like to hear your take on the play. Thanks and keep up the good work.Jamie --- Ref, I thought that it was not on to push the goalie, or any part of him, into the net along with the puck. And yet, with no call on the ice, how could the war room overturn the call on the ice in the Buffalo/Toronto game tonight? "Rule 78.5 - When a goalkeeper has been pushed into the net together with the puck after making a save." Granted, only his leg was pushed in, along with the puck. Do you have to push the whole goalie in to have it disqualified? Dwayne --- With 5:06 left in the third period Buffalo scored a goal. It was reviewed to see if the puck crossed the line. Clearly the puck did however, the goalscorer pushed the goalies pad over the line. Is this allowed? How is this not goalie interference?  Tyler Siegel Jamie, Dwayne and Tyler: The goal credited to Alexander Sulzer was not a legal goal as a result of a violation under rule 68.6 quoted by Jamie in his question above. The determination that Sulzer pushed Scrivens together with the puck into the net (video link here) after the goalie made the initial save is not reviewable and must be made by the referee(s) on the ice.  The only way that a legal goal can result in a situation such as this under rule 68.9 is, "If, however, in the opinion of the Referee, the attacking player was pushed or otherwise fouled by a defending player causing the goalkeeper to be pushed into the net together with the puck, the goal can be permitted." That obviously did not apply to Sulzer in this case. The referee was blocked out when the puck and pad of Scrivens was pushed across the goal line and therefore he was unaware that the puck entered the net as evidenced by his lack of signal one way or the other.  All that video review could determine under the rules is if the puck physically crossed the goal line; not how it got there in this particular situation.  I have maintained all season long that contact with the goalkeeper in and around the crease is the most difficult call the referee has to make. I speak from a position of knowledge because Ive been in that position so many times on the ice. You hope (as a referee) you are in the perfect position to see the play clearly. There are far too many variables that are beyond the refs control to guarantee that will happen. The General Managers had the opportunity to correct this flawed situation at their most recent meeting in Florida by adding it to the list of reviewable situations. Instead they approved a guideline to have the officials consult in the referees crease and offer their version on a goal where apparent contact with the goalkeeper had resulted. The perspective the other officials can offer the referee on the goal line is one gained from 60 to 100 feet away from the goal crease in an attempt to assist him in determining the legal scoring of a goal. As I have said in the past and I repeat, allow the goal line referee an opportunity to review the play at a monitor located in the penalty box or a secured area when contact with the goalkeeper is suspected. Games are won and lost on scoring of goals; legal or illegal! One point in the standings can be the difference between a team finishing in the playoffs or have their season end. We have seen several incidents this season where a dirty goal or incorrect decision in the crease has impacted a game. Sometimes it is humanly impossible for the referee to make the correct call in real time.  The refs need the authority to review this play. If the League is not prepared to offer the referee(s) assistance at this time I offer an alternative for consideration and quote from rule 38.4 (viii) situations subject to video review which states: "The video review process shall be permitted to assist the referees in determining the legitimacy of all potential goals (e.g. to ensure they are "good hockey goals"). For example (but not limited to), pucks that enter the net by going through the net meshing, pucks that enter the net from underneath the net frame, pucks that enter the net undetected by the referee, etc." If they dont want to allow the referee the opportunity to review contact with the goalkeeper it appears to me that Hockey Operations and the Situation Room already has a mechanism in place "to assist the referees in determining the legitimacy of all potential goals" which could include if the goalies pad is pushed over the goal line after making the initial save. I just hope they wouldnt (or didnt) deem the goal credited to Alexander Sulzer last night to be a "good hockey goal" contrary to rule 69.6. BARCELONA, Spain -- Lionel Messi criticized a Barcelona vice-president on Friday for saying the Argentina forward didnt deserve a better contract. Javier Faus, the vice-president in charge of Barcelonas finances, said two weeks ago he didnt see a reason to further extend Messis contract. Last year, the club extended the 26-year-old Messis contract through 2018. "Mr. Faus is a person that doesnt know anything about football and wants to run Barcelona like a business, which it isnt," Messi told Catalan radio RAC1. "Barcelona is the best team in the world and deserves to be represented by the best executives. "I remind him that neither I nor any of my representatives have asked for a contract extension at any moment, and he knows that very well." Messi is Barcelonas all-time leading scorer and a four-time world player of the year. He is in Argentina recovering from a hamstring injury and expected to return to Barcelona in January. Messi rarely speaks about the bbusiness side of his career.dddddddddddd This is the first time he has openly criticized an important board member of the club he joined when he was 13 years old. Besides a series of injuries, Messis season has also been marked by legal problems. Messi and his father Jorge are being investigated for allegedly not paying all their taxes. Messis father made a payment of more than 5 million euros (then $6.6 million) on Aug. 14 to cover alleged back taxes and interest. Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes called for calm and downplayed any conflict between the club and its most valuable player. "We are all pulling in the same direction in this club," Valdes said. Even so, it appears that a better deal for Messi could be in the works. Barcelona president Sandro Rosell said on Thursday he had not spoken to Messi about his contract, while adding "but my door is always open. I have no doubt that the best player in the world deserves to be the highest paid." ' ' '
