LAS VEGAS -- T. Sam Koch Jersey .J. McConnell laid out like a baserunner diving headfirst into a base. He missed the ball, but, after landing with a thud, jumped up and raced the other direction. Aaron Gordon, who did get the steal because of McConnells effort, flipped the ball ahead and Arizonas point guard ran under it, scoring an easy basket in transition. The play, and countless others like it in a spirit-crushing rout over Utah, let the rest of the Pac-12 field -- and the country -- know that one of the nations best defensive is in high gear for the post-season. Playing with a feverish intensity from the opening tip, Arizona raced through the record book and overwhelmed the stunned Utes in a 71-39 rout on Thursday to match the most lopsided game in Pac-12 tournament history. "We were locked in," Arizona coach Sean Miller said. "Everything that we wanted to do defensively, we were able to do it." Nick Johnson scored 14 points, McConnell 13 and Gordon added 11 for Arizona, which shot 53 per cent. That was just a side note to what the Wildcats were doing defensively. After playing two close games against Utah during the regular season, top-seeded Arizona (29-3) opened the tournament with a have-to-see-it-to-believe-it defensive performance. Energized by a raucous crowd that made it feel like the McKale Center, the Wildcats were at their lane-jumping, shot-contesting best against the Utes (21-11) to move into Fridays semifinals against Colorado or California. Arizona jumped on Utah early and had stamped its name in the record books by then, setting marks for fewest points allowed, fewest field goals (12) and lowest shooting percentage (25). The Wildcats held the Utes to 13 points in the first half, another record, and matched UCLAs 32-point win over Oregon State in 2006 to move into Fridays semifinals against Colorado or California. Jordan Loveridge and Delon Wright, Utahs leading scorers, combined for seven points on 1-of-4 shooting and Utah lost by 13 fewer points than its 10 previous losses combined. "When we get stops and get rebounds and get the push, our athleticism is really at play," Johnson said. "I think finishing with dunks and around the basket gets everybody going. Arizona had hoped to make a statement in the Pac-12 tournament to earn a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. The Pac-12 regular-season champion Wildcats certainly did in their tournament opener, playing with an intensity Utah had no chance of matching after playing a close game against Washington the night before. The crowd at MGM Grand Garden Arena started chants of "U of A! U of A!" long before the opening tip and the Wildcats turned the game into a rout not long after the ball went up. Racing out for dunks and 3-pointers in transition set up by their climb-in-your-jersey defence, the Wildcats stormed past the Utes with an 18-2 run that put them up 22-6. Arizona kept its foot on the Utes behind its defence, contesting every shot, pass and dribble. The Wildcats held Utah to 5-of-19 shooting while forcing eight turnovers in the first half. Loveridge and Wright, who combine for over 31 points per game, took four shots and had no points between them. "They were really putting on a defensive clinic in the first half," Utah centre Dallin Bachynski said. Second half, more of the same. Utah missed its first 11 shots -- its first field goal came 9:15 in -- and at one point had five players on the court who had yet to score in the game. Yep, it was that bad. The only thing in doubt at that point was whether the Utes would get to 30 points. They got there with 4:17 left, but, boy, was it ugly. "They took pride in guarding us," Utah coach Larry Krystkowiak said. "They took the life out of us." Jimmy Smith Jersey . Reassurance came from Paul Tesori, his caddie and close friend whose newborn son is in intensive care in a Florida hospital. "Paul sent me a text this morning, just told me he loved me and wanted to go out and fight as hard as I would any other day," Simpson said Sunday after doing just that. Darian Stewart Purple Jersey . Miller finished in two minutes, 6.09 seconds, one day before the first medal race on the Alpine schedule. The 36-year-old American also turned in the top time in Thursdays opening training session. MILWAUKEE -- Golden State forward David Lee is making his presence felt and giving a team with many weapons another dimension. His play of late has reached All-Star calibre, Warriors coach Mark Jackson insisted after watching Lee lead Golden State to its 10th consecutive win Tuesday night, the Warriors longest streak since the 1975-76 season and one short of the franchise record of 11 wins in a row during the 1971-72 campaign. Fresh off of being named the Western Conference Player of the Week, Lee dominated around the basket, scoring 22 points on 10-of-12 shooting and grabbing 18 rebounds to spark the Warriors to a 101-80 win over the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday night. "Ive said all along that (Stephen) Curry is an All-Star, theres no question about that. But the way that David Lee has played the last 15 ball games, hes an All-Star," Jackson said. "He has separated himself." Lee hit his first nine shots from the field and recorded his 21st double-double of the season. "Im trying to be more aggressive and I think our team needs me to be more aggressive in the paint," Lee said. "We have so many guys that are good jump shooters, we need somebody around the rim thats going to attack the basket. Its all about taking what the defence gives us. Most importantly, I think our team is playing more consistent basketball." Curry contributed 15 points for the Warriors despite connecting on just 5 of 18 shots. Klay Thompson also scored 15 points, on 6-of-18 shooting. "Were not built offensively, were built defensively," Jackson said. "You can have off nights offensively and still win ball games. We defended at a high level and when you do that good things happen." Golden State centre Andrew Bogut, who had 12 rebounds and eight points, said he and Lee stress the importance of rebounding each time they take the court. Golden State outrebounded Milwaukee 54 to 37. "We set a goal, David and myself, to win the rebound battle," Bogut said. The Warriors played their sixth game of a seven-city road trip that concludes Wednesday night in Brooklyn. Golden State is trying to become the first team in NBA history to go undefeated on a road trip of seven or more games. "Its this close so were going to chase history," Jackson said. "My guys have paid the price and Im incredibly proud of them." Golden State led by just two at the half against the Bucks, who have the NBAs worst record. C.J. Mosley Jersey. The Warriors broke open the game with a 23-7 run to start the third quarter, highlighted by a step-back 3-pointer from the corner by Curry. Later in the quarter, Curry hit an acrobatic reverse layup while being fouled, extending Golden States lead to 19. The Warriors led 79-68 heading into the fourth. A 3 by O.J. Mayo cut Golden States margin to eight to start the fourth, but the Warriors quickly built the lead back to double digits and cruised to victory. The Warriors led by as many as 22 late in the fourth. Ersan Ilyasova had 20 points and Brandon Knight 18 for the Bucks. "(The Warriors) have a lot of weapons and can beat you in a number of ways," Bucks coach Larry Drew said. "I thought we did some good things, but we didnt do it for the duration of the game. We had too many breakdowns, too many lapses and our margin for error is very small." Drew said he implored his team to play with high energy to start the second half, to no avail. "We came out and were flat-lined. They got on a good run and we just couldnt overcome the deficit," Drew said. Energetic play needs to be a team goal, Knight said. "It has to be all five guys that are on the court," he said. "We have to have everybody playing with as much energy as we can." Milwaukee grabbed a 30-28 lead after the first quarter, sparked by Knights 10 points. Golden State opened the second quarter on a 10-0 run and went on to a 50-48 lead at the half. Golden State shot 55 per cent from the field in the half, despite connecting on only 4 of 14 3-point attempts. Knight had 13 first-half points for the Bucks and Ilyasova added 12. NOTES: Ilyasova sank his first 3-point attempt of the game. He entered having misfired on 20 consecutive 3s. . Bogut, a No. 1 overall pick of the Bucks in 2005, played his first game in Milwaukee since a March 2012 trade that sent him to Golden State. ... Drew said peace returned to the locker room following a dustup between teammates Larry Sanders and Gary Neal after Saturdays blowout loss at Phoenix. "Were back in love with one another. Its a very emotional game and tempers do flare," Drew said. "The most important thing is that there is no snowball effect. We make it an isolated incident." . Draymond Green returned to the Golden State lineup after injuring his ankle early in Sundays win over Washington. ' ' '
