Are this years 3-6 Giants better than last years 3-6 Giants?
are-this-years-3-6-giants-better-than-last-years-3-6-giants

A year ago, the New York Giants were 3-6 and pretty much out http://www.nfllionsofficial.com/Ashlee-Palmer-Jersey of playoff contention, even in a very weak NFC East. They finished 7-9 and made a ton of offseason changes, none more significant than the decision to bring in a new offensive coordinator and system. This year, the Giants are 3-6, again, and pretty much out of playoff contention in an NFC East that now features two of the better teams in the league. So it's fair to wonder what all those changes were about and why Giants fans should feel good about where the team stands right now. "Well, I don't know. I can't even talk about that because all I'm engrossed in is this year," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said Monday. "It doesn't feel good. There's progress made. There's lots of things you can point to that are good. But we're not finishing the job, and so that dominates all of our thinking. We all know what this game is about. You've got to win." Results are what matters, of course, and wins are that on which coaches and players are judged. Last year's Giants went 4-3 from this point on and got back to respectability. This year's Giants could yet do that, especially once the schedule softens up in December, and if they do then things will look much better at the end of the year than they do now. The reason the Giants' owners don't like to talk to the media during the season is that they insist on evaluating seasons as 16-game wholes. So while they're obviously not happy with where things stand after nine games, they're also determined not to make rash decisions based on nine games. Should things fall apart and the Giants finish at 4-12 or something like that, all bets are off, and major changes to the coaching staff could be considered. But if they finish the way they did a year ago -- say they end up 7-9 again -- the case can be made that they have shown progress in the first year of a totally new offense with very young players forced into major roles by injury or the extensive roster rebuild. How can you fire a two-time Super Bowl-winning head coach one year after overhauling a roster that required more than one year's worth of overhaul? The Giants' free-agent spree in March wasn't a Broncos-style, ramp-up-and-go-for-it spend. It was a necessary spend, to fill out empty spaces on a roster decimated Lions Barry Sanders Womens Jersey by age and years of poor draft decisions. The counter question, of course, is how do you keep a coach who's missed the playoffs five out of the last six years in a league in which the playoff field turns over drastically every season? To justify that, the Giants would have to come clean and admit that this year was always planned as the first of a long-range rebuilding project. But to sell themselves on that, the team's owners will have to have seen clear progress in the new offense by the end of the year. "I feel like we are a better team," quarterback Eli Manning said. "I feel like we're doing some good things. We're just not, for whatever reason, able to put four quarters together." There are many potential reasons, none of which an NFL team would admit during the course of a season. The Giants have suffered significant injuries on both sides of the ball, to cornerstone players like Victor Cruz, Rashad Jennings and Prince Amukamara. They have asked a lot of some very young players on the offensive line. When your roster is young, thin and constantly being reshuffled due to injury, you're going to be inconsistent. This is the fact of where the Giants are nine games into the 2014 season, and just because they can't say it doesn't mean I can't. The reasons to feel good include Odell Beckham Jr., Larry Donnell, Johnathan Hankins and Manning's performance in the new offense. There are things on which to continue building. The defense looks a mess and may need an overhaul, but that's part of this process the Giants are undergoing -- evaluating which of last offseason's moves worked and what they need to fix from this point forward. It's http://www.nfllionsofficial.com/Bill-Bentley-Jersey understandable even as the on-field product is frustrating, and assuming the Giants finish the season somewhere near respectability, it won't be wrong for the decision-makers to point to progress and let Coughlin keep managing them back toward contention. But a lot depends on what happens from here on out. The final seven games of this season will tell us much more about whether this year's 3-6 is somehow more encouraging than last year's was. And as Coughlin knows, if you don't win, it's tough for anybody to feel good about anything.
