Bears vs. Steelers 2017: 5 things to know for their Week 3 game

Bears vs. Steelers 2017: 5 things to know for their Week 3 game
bears-vs-steelers-2017-5-things-to-know-for-their-week-3-game
The 0-2 Chicago Bears’ difficult start to the season continues Week 3 with the 2-0 Pittsburgh Steelers coming to town. With both teams trending in opposite directions, there is a lot to digest heading into this troublesome matchup for the home team.

Mike Glennon will try to get his season back on track after his breakdown against his former team last week, and he’ll have to do it against a stout defense supported by an efficient offense that will test the Bears’ defense for four quarters.

A lot of things are going to have to go right for Chicago to pull off of the upset,Womens Robert Quinn Jersey, but it starts with properly scouting their opponent and putting their players in the best position to be successful.

Bears vs. Steelers 2017: 5 things to know for their Week 3 game

Everybody knows Antonio Brown is one of the top wide receivers in the NFL, and 2017 is already off to a hot start for the Steelers star. He leads the league in receiving yards through two weeks as Ben Roethlisberger’s favorite target.

The Bears are going to need a group effort to slow him down, as neither Kyle Fuller nor Marcus Cooper can handle the likes of Brown one-on-one over the course of the game.

there will be plenty of times when the receiver goes up against solo man coverage,Womens Sammy Watkins Jersey,Certainly, but the Bears will need their safeties to keep tabs on the speedy Brown on every passing play.

and Julio Jones had 66 yards in Week 1,Womens Robert Woods Jersey,The Bears allowed Mike Evans to go for 93 yards on seven catches last week, but Brown offers a different style of speed and explosiveness in this game.

Slowing him down is easier said than done,Womens Connor Barwin Jersey, but doing so is going to be critical to holding down the Steelers’ offense

The Bears’ defense has had issues getting off of the field this season, they get tired and worn out, and over the course of a game,Authentic Kayvon Webster Jersey, leading to further struggles that are only worsened by a poor offense on the other side.

but they started to get more into it last week,They’re going to be tested by a Steelers’ offense that is going to turn to the up-tempo attack. It wasn’t something they did a lot in Week 1, as they have successfully the past few seasons.

Roethlisberger went 7-of-8 on aimed passes for 109 yards in no huddle situations last week,Womens Kayvon Webster Jersey, and running back Le’Veon Bell also took eight handoffs in the up-tempo attack.

they’ve ranked in the top eight in no huddle percentage,In the last four seasons, and so they’re going to have some opportunities to tire the Bears’ defense out to make one of their bigger issues that much more prevalent.

Coverage is going to have to be tighter and the pass rush is going to need to be more effective to slow the Steelers’ offense down. Regardless, the Bears may need to do a little bit more rotation in the front seven to keep fresh legs on the field.

Bears vs. Steelers 2017: 5 things to know for their Week 3 game

and now over a month later,Wide receiver Markus Wheaton underwent surgery for a broken finger in mid-August, he could make his Bears debut against his former team Sunday.

Wheaton was a third-round pick by the Steelers back in 2013, playing there for four season before coming to Chicago this offseason on a two-year deal. He should certainly have some added motivation to play the team that let him walk this offseason.

The Bears’ offense has lacked much of a deep threat following the injuries to Cameron Meredith and Kevin White, although a large part of that problem has been the quarterback under center.

Wheaton adds some straight-line speed that was missing from the Bears wide receiver group,Still, and getting more veteran talent back at a thin position is never a bad thing.

That being said, so there’s a chance Wheaton isn’t quite up to 100-percent playing speed in his first game back, he hasn’t played a lot of meaningful football in the last nine months, if he is even ready to go on Sunday.

Bears vs. Steelers 2017: 5 things to know for their Week 3 game

but the group put together a poor performance last week against the Buccaneers,The Bears’ offensive line was supposed to be one of the strengths of the offense, and they face another stout front seven with the Steelers on Sunday.

Defensive end Cameron Heyward is off to another strong start, according to Pro Football Focus, tied with Akiem Hicks with the most “stops” among defensive linemen in the NFL, meaning tackles that constitute a loss for the offense.

but he’s also battling a groin injury now that might keep him out Sunday. Bud Dupree and Anthony Chickillo have also been disruptive,Rookie outside linebacker T.J. Watt is in the beginning of a breakout season,Authentic Robert Quinn Jersey, and the Steelers have reliable depth across their front.

The banged up Chicago line could potentially get Kyle Long back, who averaged less than a yard per carry,Authentic Sammy Watkins Jersey, but even the healthy players last week struggled to open up space for Jordan Howard, and Glennon was frequently under pressure on longer passing plays.

he’s been under pressure on 21.6 percent of his drop backs,Authentic Robert Woods Jersey,A big part of the Steelers’ offensive success this year has come from the pass protection Roethlisberger is getting. According to Pro Football Focus, the third-lowest percentage in the NFL.

The veteran quarterback gets plenty of time to scan the field and find open receivers, and that extra time gives his speedy receivers more time to create separation down field.

This will provide a major challenge for the Bears’ pass rush that has struggled to pressure quarterbacks through two games this season. Last week against the Buccaneers,Authentic Connor Barwin Jersey, Chicago only affected Jameis Winston on 18.2 percent of his drop backs.

Leonard Floyd and Wille Young have been very quiet this season rushing from the edge, while Pernell McPhee doesn’t look like the pass-rusher he once was.

Akiem Hicks has been the Bears’ most consistent rusher this season,Authentic Andrew Whitworth Jersey, but even he had a quiet game last week against a Tampa Bay offensive line that isn’t exactly dominant.

If they can’t collectively get pressure on Roethlisberger, it could be another long day for Vic Fangio’s defense.

Behind Enemy Lines: Q&A with Steelers Managing Editor Parker Hurley

Q: With the Bears rushing attack struggling mightily against the Falcons last week, should we expect to see more of the same this week?

and Cameron Heyward dominated the Vikings himself in Week Two. The team lost Stephon Tuitt in Week One,Womens Andrew Whitworth Jersey,A: The Steelers run defense looks to be taking a step forward this season. They shut down a hyped up Browns offensive line, but Tyson Alualu has done a commendable job filling in for him. Javon Hargrave is exploding onto the scene in his second season and overall this three-man front is a huge strength to their team. If the Bears offensive line is not at full strength it could be tough sledding in the trenches.

Q: Tomlin called Mike Glennon ‘statuesque’ this week. Do you expect the Steelers to get plenty of sacks against Glennon?

if Glennon is not able to navigate the pocket,A: It could be in the books. T.J. Watt is dealing with a groin injury and will be limited if he plays at all on Sunday. However, but Duprees’ return the next week was stellar. He put up a sack and could be in for a favorable day against Bobby Massie. Adding in the Steelers defensive line, behind Watt is James Harrison and Anthony Chickillo who has excelled when on the field this season. Chickillo filled in for Bud Dupree in Week One, he had better be getting the ball out quick.

will the Steelers be able to make up his production? If he does,Q: If Stephon Tuitt doesn’t play, what do you expect out of him not at 100%?

Alualu has been completely fine as a replacement,A: I am hoping Tuitt does not play. I would just err on the side of caution with his injury. They are 2-0, it would mean he is at 100%. As mentioned, it is only Week Three and this team has big picture expectations. Turning a two-week injury into a season-ender because he came back even a day too early isn’t worth it. If he does play, and even L.T. Walton has played well stepping in as the rotational end. They would have to feel really comfortable with his status. That could be scary for the Bears because Tuitt only played two snaps in Week One but blew up the line in both plays.

Q: What kind of impact will Ryan Shazier make, especially against a beat-up Bears offensive line?

A: The biggest key for Shazier will likely be watching a player like Zach Miller or Tarik Cohen. Shazier is electric fast and is much better in space than in the trenches. Don’t get me wrong, his best play is keeping the boundaries at the second level and taking on pass-catching threats. The Steelers will likely be looking for him to read and react Mike Glennon in the middle of the field, he can time the snap and come flying in for a tackle for loss on almost any given play. However, and potentially change the game by forcing him into a big mistake.

Q: Who are some under-the-radar players to watch for?

especially in blitzing off of the edge. The Steelers tend to send him or Joe Haden off of the edge at least once per game now. Hilton will likely see a lot of Kendall Wright,A: Mike Hilton is a player who came out of nowhere and has turned into a starter as a slot cornerback by Week Three. He is a second-year undrafted free agent, he plays with fire, and a bit undersized as well. However, who on paper may be the best wide receiver in Chicago. There could be a lot of passes directed towards #31 Mike Hilton this week.
