Maple Leafs Morning Skate: Lineup, starting goalie, notes, news, scratches vs. Red Wings

Maple Leafs Morning Skate: Lineup, starting goalie, notes, news, scratches vs. Red Wings
Less than 24 hours after securing a road victory and a measure of revenge over the team that bounced them from the 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Maple Leafs will be back in action Wednesday night, with two big divisional points up for grabs.

On Tuesday, 2-0. It finishes the second half of a back-to-back at Air Canada Centre against the Red Wings on Wednesday. The Maple Leafs (5-1-1) sit atop the Atlantic Division with 11 points, Toronto traveled to Capital One Arena and defeated the Capitals, while the Red Wings (4-2-0) sit three points behind with a game in hand.

Connor Brown scored the first and what ended up being the game-winning goal for Toronto on Tuesday. He was skating on a new line, with James van Riemsdyk and Tyler Bozak, in place of Mitch Marner. Nazem Kadri sealed the victory for the Leafs with an empty-net goal.

Frederik Andersen stopped all 30 Washington shots and earned his first shutout of the season. Earlier in the week, head coach Mike Babcock said he would split the goaltending duties during this back-to-back, and Curtis McElhinny is expected to make his first start of the season for Toronto on Wednesday.

Leafs forward Patrick Marleau is expected to play in his 1,500th career game on Wednesday. He would be the 18th player in NHL history to accomplish the feat.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are quickly proving they can win any style of game.

They have shown an explosive offense in the early season, but Tuesday night showed they can win the tight games as well with a 2-0 victory over the Washington Capitals in Toronto.

The Capitals eliminated the Maple Leafs in six games last season in the playoffs.

The Detroit Red Wings, who did not play Tuesday as they awaited their game against the Maple Leafs on Wednesday at the Air Canada Centre, are impressed by a team that is being driven by a nucleus of good, young players.

"These guys have taken their game to the next level," Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall told The Detroit News. "They came in last year and they didn't just want to be there, they contributed right away, and this year they seem like they've taken it to a whole another level. It's impressive to see."

Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock, said he was not surprised with how his team performed despite the scarcity of goals.,Authentic Kris Letang jersey, the former Red Wings coach

"I think they just played," he said. "I don't think it's that new, we've been in lots of games. In saying that,Authentic Jake Guentzel jersey, the last two games offensively we haven't been as good. We have to have a look at that and find a way to be better and generate more offense. We think we can and so we'll have a look at it and get ready for the Red Wings."

Babcock caused a stir Monday at practice when he dropped Mitch Marner to the fourth line with Dominic Moore and Matt Martin, who moved up to the line with James van Riemsdyk and Tyler Bozak., changing places with Connor Brown

Brown scored the first goal of the game Tuesday in the third period. The other Toronto goal, was into an empty net.,adidas Matt Murray jersey, scored by Nazem Kadri

"Playing with those two guys, they're really easy to play with, for the most part we were on the gas. We got a little too loose when we weren't scoring," Brown said. "There wasn't much of an adjustment period. I thought we had a really good first period,Authentic Joe Pavelski jersey, but we stuck to the game plan pretty well."

"I liked that Brownie worked hard, he was good on the penalty kill," Babcock said. "We didn't have a lot of that type of play tonight -- like I said, he got to the net and they got the puck there, it was a lot of rush instead of being heavy.

"It was great to see him get to the net and be rewarded. I thought Mitch (Marner)'s line,Authentic Joe Thornton jersey, too, with Moore and (Martin), I thought they had a big night too. I thought they played real good."

dynamic group that has transformed the Maple Leafs in a team that can contend.,Marner is part of the young

"Their line wasn't going, so tie goes to the veterans," Babcock said Monday. "(Marner) just happens to be the kid on the line, that's it."

Let's not read too much into that. You have to have all your units going and we're trying to do that. It was a big win in Montreal (4-3 in overtime Saturday), but saying that, we didn't generate a lot and they did. When we win, everything's not always great and when we lose everything's not always bad."

"Defensively," Marner said., right now I'm not too happy how that is going

The Red Wings (4-2-0) will enter the game against the Maple Leafs (5-1-0) with a positive feeling despite losing 3-2 at home on Monday to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

which was 0 of 6.,Their big problem against the Lightning was their power play

"I thought we were the better team five-on-five," Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. "We had more quality chances. In the end, the difference would be specialty teams -- (the Lightning) scored two on specialty teams, we scored zero. That's the difference."

The Red Wings expect that Danny DeKeyser will be out for another one to two weeks after blocking a shot against the Dallas Stars on Oct. 10. He also has a slightly sprained ankle.

Blashill is impressed by Toronto's depth at forward led by a group of young players with Auston Matthews.

"I felt that when we played them in the Centennial Classic (Jan. 1 in Toronto) that was as deep a forward group and as dangerous a group as anybody in the league," Blashill said. "Right there with Pittsburgh, I felt. And they certainly haven't lost anybody. If anything, they've added somebody (Patrick Marleau) that is probably going to be a Hall of Famer.

"If you're on your heels, and make them defend as much as possible.", you're in trouble. You better pressure them as much as possible

Curtis McElhinney got all the help he needed in his season debut.

McElhinney made 30 saves and the Toronto Maple Leafs scored four times in the first period in a 6-3 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday night.

McElhinney stopped 15 shots in the third period to hold off the Red Wings.,Starting in place of Frederik Andersen

"There's a little rust on my end, that's for sure," McElhinney said. "Obviously, but it sure did feel nice to get in there, the run support early on helps and goes a long way. It's just a big win for us and I'm happy I could help out."

Nazem Kadri, Zach Hyman, Connor Brown, adidas Kris Letang jersey, Auston Matthews,Authentic Matt Murray jersey, Morgan Rielly and William Nylander scored to help Toronto improve to an NHL-best 6-1-0.

"Great to seeadidas Jake Guentzel jersey,," Kadri said. "There's a lot of good teams and it won't be this loose for long.", but it's still October

The Maple Leafs were coming off a 2-0 victory at Washington on Tuesday night.

"We used everybody last night, adidas Joe Pavelski jersey, a good four-line rotation," Toronto coach Mike Babcock said. "Our guys were fresher than they might have been. McElhinney had a real solid effort for us, so that helped us,Authentic Patrick Marleau jersey, he had to be good early. Even though we scored (early) it took a while to get our legs going."

Henrik Zetterberg, Tomas Tatar, Jonathan Ericsson scored for the Red Wings, and Nick Jensen had three assists. Jimmy Howard gave up three goals on four shots before getting yanked in favor of Petr Mrazek late in the first period.

Toronto scored on its first two shots and four of its first five.

"I think there was some funny goals, adidas Patrick Marleau jersey, some of it is. It's one of those nights."," Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. "''I don't know if it was all on them

The Maple Leafs opened the scoring after catching the Red Wings on a bad line change. Kadri took a long pass from Ron Hainsey, tipping Rielly's shot past Howard., walked in and beat Howard over the blocker at 5:56. Hyman scored 44 seconds later

"I thought (Kadri's) group was our best group tonight," Babcock said.,adidas Joe Thornton jersey, dialed in start to finish

Zetterberg put Detroit on the board with 7:50 to play in the first after getting McElhinney to bite on a fake before skating around the net and finishing on a wraparound with the netminder out of position.

Matt Martin didn't record Toronto's third shot on net until near the 14-minute mark of the period and it turned out to be the only save of the night for Howard.

Matthews chased Howard from the Wings net with 4:14 to play in the first, with Brown beating him through a screen on the first shot he faced — 40 seconds after Matthews' goal., snapping a shot past him from almost the exact same spot Kadri did to open the scoring. Mrazek didn't fare any better
