National roaming UMTS: o2 customers benefit

National roaming UMTS: o2 customers benefit
national-roaming-umts-o2-customers-benefit

Telefónica Germany has announced to merge the UMTS networks of o2 and E-Plus from April 15, 2015. This is smartphone news called national roaming. First attempts to do this, already took place in January in a small region in North Rhine-Westphalia. After the announcement in the March 2015 to put both networks also customers in the Augsburg region could use national roaming as another test area. As the trade magazine teltarif.de now reports, especially the o2 customers will benefit from the merger of the UMTS networks. The online portal are documents, showing to customers in the o2 network thanks to national roaming over a 16 percent can expect better UMTS network coverage, especially in rural regions. E-Plus customers gain only around 3 per cent in the 3 g coverage. At the indoor network coverage with UMTS customers will benefit equally, however, by o2 (16 percent more 3 g coverage) and E-plus (14 percent).

Continues according to teltarif.de documentation of Telefónica Germany out, that not all regions can use national roaming until mid-April. Rather this could take "up to mid May 2015". To a point could see anger the E-Plus customers, because these may not in the future, whether they use national roaming. Because always is a + displayed behind the provider icon on the screen, whether it is now in its own network or the network of partners. It looks, however, different for o2 customers, here it is then in the case of national roaming (i.e. in the E-plus network) o2-de + in the display. It is back on its own network, it's going down + away in the display.

Telefónica Germany automatically unlocks national roaming

Again and again one hears wondering what one mid-April with the merger of the UMTS networks as users do. Telefónica Germany stresses that the national roaming automatically will be activated. Customers must be inactive by itself. All contract and prepaid customers benefit from the shared 3 g network by o2, E-Plus and BASE. This also applies for all partner companies and mobile phone discounter such as for example simyo, blue, simply or ALDI TALK.

This automatic activation also means: who has no icon for national roaming from April 15 in his mobile phone, have is something else to be patient. Here you maybe live in a region that still not benefited from the merger of the UMTS networks and you have to wait until mid May 2015.

Merger of the LTE networks in the summer 2016

In future, customers of o2 and E-plus so can use a joint UMTS network about national roaming. Until the merger of the LTE network it is, however, still take some time. As of this year's world Mobile Congress in Barcelona announced Thorsten Dirks, CEO of Telefónica Germany, on the edge, that you want to merge the LTE network by o2 and E-plus in the summer of next year and therefore until 2016.

Update 31.03.2015

Telefónica Germany announced today at 31.03 and not only on April 15 to put together the UMTS networks, after the tests in the area around old churches and Augsburg are successful. Within, all customers should benefit from a few weeks of o2, E-Plus, BASE and the partners (ALDI TALK, Simyo, blue, etc.) of a better network coverage, particularly in rural areas and a dense network in the cities. How long it takes until all customers benefit from the national roaming, is not known. The activation of the SIM card for the other network is done automatically in any case, customers need to be inactive.
