Pete Carroll: Kam Chancellor must decide on football future

Pete Carroll: Kam Chancellor must decide on football future

Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said Kam Chancellor must decide on his future after suffering a season-ending neck injury.

Carroll confirmed Monday during an interview with 710 ESPN Seattle that Chancellor won't play again this season and said the star safety faces a decision for 2018 and beyond.

"The future is really again up to Kam," Carroll said. "He does what he wants to do with that. He'll tell you what he wants to tell you about it."

29,Chancellor, has missed Seattle's past two games after injuring his neck against Arizona reported earlier this month that Chancellor was likely headed to injured reserve.

In a news conference later Monday afternoon,Womens Mason Foster Jersey, Carroll said it was up to doctors, Carroll said Chancellor doesn't need surgery as of right now. Asked what the determining factor was in the decision that he won't play again this season,Womens Jamison Crowder Jersey, Seahawks trainers and Chancellor himself.

"He feels good. He feels comfortable, it's him. We'll support him all that we can.",Womens Morgan Moses Jersey," Carroll said of Chancellor, which is good. But there's a process as far as when we do the work with up-and-down stuff. We'll figure that out. Really,Womens Spencer Long Jersey, I'm trying to be very respective of Kam and let him kind of call the shots as far as what's known and all that kind of stuff and how he wants to talk about it, who signed a three-year extension with Seattle over the summer. "He's not in discomfort at all, because this is him,Womens Bashaud Breeland Jersey, it's not us

Carroll's mention of Chancellor having to decide about his football future underscores the possibility that he might never play again -- for Seattle or anyone else.

worrying about that right now,"Not really considering,Womens Shawn Lauvao Jersey," Carroll said when asked if he's thinking about that possibility. "We're just trying to get the week-to-week here. More concerned about Kam and his mentality and how he's doing. He'll be in charge of all that."

Carroll also told 710 ESPN Seattle that defensive end Cliff Avril will have surgery Tuesday to repair his neck injury. Carroll described it as disk-related surgery and said Avril faces a similar decision about his football future.

Avril, hasn't played since injuring his neck in Week 4, 31, when his chin landed on Jacoby Brissett's heel as Avril dove to tackle the Indianapolis Colts quarterback.

"I don't know what the future holds," Carroll said of whether or not Avril will be able to play again. "Guys do come back from that surgery sometimes and sometimes they don't. It just depends."

Carroll told 710 ESPN Seattle that the Seahawks will have cornerback Shaquill Griffin (concussion) and running back Mike Davis (groin) available this week. Both missed Sunday's victory over the San Francisco 49ers.

Carroll also acknowledged for the first time that rookie defensive lineman Malik McDowell, is unlikely to play this season. McDowell, the team's top draft pick, who is on the non-football injury list, has been sidelined since he suffered what the team called a severe concussion in a summer ATV accident. Carroll hadn't ruled out the possibility of McDowell playing this season until he essentially did so Monday.

"I don't think that's happening," Carroll said. "There's not any progress being made in that direction."

 Carroll said,Asked about McDowell's long-term outlook, "I don't know. I don't have any updates for you."

Carroll said cornerback DeShawn Shead won't return to practice this week. Shead is on the physically unable to perform list recovering from knee surgery. Defensive end Dion Jordan has a chance to practice this week after missing Sunday's game with a neck/shoulder injury, Carroll said.

The Jaguars blew out the Indianapolis Colts during their Week 7 matchup earlier this year. Now set for a rematch in Week 13, Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone isn't taking the divisional rivals lightly.

I've got to get this team ready to play this Sunday and I've got to do a good job during the week,"Like I've said before," Marrone said Wednesday.

The Jaguars dominated the Colts in every phase during the 27-0 win in October. The offense produced three touchdowns, the defense tallied 10 sacks and special teams had one of its better performances of the season.

Marrone said the Colts have played better since the shutout. Indianapolis has been in a lot of tight games but has yet to find a way to win consistently.

"I think they are playing extremely hard, they're getting people open, they've got some weapons on that side of the ball,Authentic Jamison Crowder Jersey," Marrone said. "The quarterback is doing a nice job, special teams the same way so,Authentic Morgan Moses Jersey, we've got to concentrate on getting ourselves ready."

Colts quarterback Jacoby Brissett was manhandled by the Jaguars' pass rush in their last battle. Marrone said the second-year player can hurt opposing defenses if he has time to throw.

"He's not throwing interceptions now," Marrone said.

"You're not seeing someone back there doing that,Authentic Spencer Long Jersey, he can make all the throws. He's a very good throwing quarterback but he's also got the mobility to get out of the way and extend plays. What I see is when it's clean, he's going through his reads. He's someone - from what I see - if you give him time and he stays in the rhythm,Authentic Bashaud Breeland Jersey, he does a heck of a job."

The Jaguars' starting offensive line may be intact when the team hosts the Colts at EverBank Field this weekend.

Starting left guard Patrick Omameh (calf) and right tackle Jermey Parnell (knee) participated in a limited capacity at practice to start Week 13.

Parnell has missed the last three games, while Omameh has been sidelined for the two consecutive contests. The duo has been replaced by swing tackle Josh Wells and guard Chris Reed in recent weeks.

Their return to practice early in the week is a good sign for the Jaguars. If the pair of linemen can gradually become more involved in practice over the next few days, their chances of playing on Sunday should be relatively high.

While Omameh and Parnell were back,Authentic Shawn Lauvao Jersey, the Jaguars were still without two starters at practice Wednesday.

Wide receiver Allen Hurns (ankle) and linebacker Telvin Smith (concussion) were sidelined due to injuries.

Quarterback Blake Bortles (wrist), wide receiver Marqise Lee (knee), cornerback Jalen Ramsey (ankle),Authentic Tress Way Jersey, running back Leonard Fournette (ankle), safety Tashaun Gipson (knee) and linebackers Donald Payne (hamstring) and Lerentee McCray (hamstring) also appeared on the team's injury report.

- The Jaguars have announced that the team will wear teal again this season.

Jacksonville will wear the alternate teal jerseys in Week 14 against the Seattle Seahawks. The game will take place at EverBank Field at 4:25 p.m. on December 10.

- Marrone said he is confident in rookie linebacker Blair Brown if the team needs to replace Smith in the lineup. The head coach said Brown has improved throughout the season.

- Veteran running back Chris Ivory has been struggling since the bye week. He has been given just 16 snaps over the last three games. During that stretch, Ivory has produced -4 yards and a fumble on nine total touches.

Marrone put some of the blame for Ivory's woes on the offensive line's inability to open up holes in the defense.

- Marrone said he has seen cornerback Aaron Colvin elevate his play in recent weeks. He is happy with his production on the season.

but the thought is he’s really ramping it up to see how hard he can go with the trainers and all of that,“I need to see his workouts and see what they’re saying about it, and then we’ll see. But there’s a chance in the next few weeks that he has a shot to come back.”

It is great to hear Carson has made significant progress, but it is still very unlikely that he can return to help Seattle this season.

The Seahawks certainly have more details than I do, as they are working with Carson on rehab. But the video evidence in this case is fairly conclusive.

“Ramping it up to see how hard he can go" is a long way from playing.

Based on video of the injury, Carson’s left foot was trapped and turned to face a different direction than the kneecap.

This indicates a fibula fracture with complete disruption of the syndesmotic ligaments. Thus, he required surgery.

It seems he is making a fantastic recovery already. But I think it is too much to ask for a running back to return and be effective.

Even if he were jogging now (which already would be a quick recovery), he is still weeks from running full speed and many more weeks from being able cut like a running back is required to do.

If he were running today, six weeks would be an excellent and fast time for return to NFL football. The season only has 5 games remaining.

As we said when the injury first happened, Carson is done for the season.

It would be great news and a longshot if Carson returned for some playoff action, but it is asking too much to expect him to return this regular season.

Dieter Kurtenbach is pretty pumped about getting to see Jimmy G behind center on Sunday in Chicago. But he also warns that boxscore expectations should be tempered. Glimpses of sparks are what you’re looking for with Jimmy Garoppolo.
