Raiders Due Diligence: Team satisfies NFLs Rooney Rule

Raiders Due Diligence: Team satisfies NFLs Rooney Rule

The Raiders and former coach Jon Gruden seem destined to reunite, but that didn’t stop the team from doing its due diligence in satisfying the NFL’s Rooney Rule this week.

The Rooney Rule requires NFL teams to interview at least one minority candidate for the general manager or head coaching positions when they become available. By satisfying it, the team will avoid a fine.

Much has been made of the apparent mockery that the team has made of the Rooney Rule by seemingly already having their guy pegged in Jon Gruden over the past week. With many feeling that Johnson and the other currently unnamed candidate the team interviewed haven’t gotten a fair shake given how the Gruden reports and news has been flying in since Saturday.

The rule isn’t perfect, and not every candidate will get a fair shake if a team already has their hearts set on another non-minority candidate. But it is certainly better than not having any rule in place and we now know that Oakland did their part to satisfy the rule in its current form.

Jon Gruden will be introduced as the next Raiders head coach on Tuesday, according to multiple reports.

The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that the Raiders are preparing a whopping 10-year contract for Gruden and “the expectation is that it eclipses $100M.”

Mark Davis was even willing to cough up an ownership stake in the franchise that’s slated to move to Las Vegas in 2020. Gruden denied that report.

Owner Mark Davis hopes that will change now that he has lured Gruden back for a second stint as the team’s coach.

A person with knowledge of the team’s plans said the Raiders are planning a news conference Tuesday to announce that Gruden is leaving the broadcast booth to come back to coaching. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Friday because the team has made no formal announcement.

and talk immediately turned to Gruden,Womens Mark Barron Jersey,The Raiders fired Del Rio following a disappointing six-win season, who has been out of coaching since being fired by Tampa Bay following the 2008 season. Gruden has spent nine years as the lead analyst  “Monday Night Football” telecast. He is scheduled to work his final game Saturday in Kansas City when the Chiefs take on the Tennessee Titans in a playoff game.

The Raiders fired Jack Del Rio as head coach after the team's regular-season finale on Sunday. Oakland lost that game to the Los Angeles Chargers to fall to a disappointing 6-10 record on the season.

he went 25-23 -- including a 12-4 record in 2016 -- but for owner Mark Davis,The Raiders fired Jack Del Rio on Sunday. We know this because Del Rio announced the news at what turned out to be his final post-game press conference with the team. In three seasons,Womens Alec Ogletree Jersey, the thought of landing Jon Gruden was too much to ignore.

where he coached from 1998-2001,The reports of Gruden's return to Oakland, have been percolating for more than a week and by Monday morning the rumors were pretty clear: It was going to happen.

On Wednesday, who is currently color commentator for "Monday Night Football, Gruden,Authentic Greg Zuerlein Jersey," appeared on "Golic and Wingo" to talk about his future.

"That's up to Mark Davis, I think we'll all know," he said. "I've had good conversations with Mark and they're still going through the interview process. When he knows, but I appreciate Adam [Schefter] and Chris [Mortensen's] confidence that I have a chance of getting that job -- it's awful nice though."

But what if Davis says Gruden's his guy,Authentic Rodger Saffold Jersey, will he be the next coach of the Raiders?

"I think there's a good chance," Gruden said.

But here's the thing: Gruden hasn't been an NFL coach since 2008. So much has changed in that time -- from the rules to schemes to player evaluation and roster building -- that it's fair to wonder if the game has passed Gruden by.

"I'm excited about where I'm at in terms of studying the game and am prepared to come back and coach," Gruden explained before repeating things we've heard several times in recent days.

I gotta be honest with you. It's been a long couple weeks. I know they've gone through their process of interviewing candidates. And until they're done I won't know but I did have a good meeting with Mark,"I just don't want to sit here and speculate. ... I don't know what's gonna happen, I've known him a long time and I got a lot of respect for the Raider football organization."

Now the Raiders persuaded the Henderson City Council to shave $6.05 million off the $12.1-million market value of 55 acres of land to build their practice field and corporate headquarters near the city’s executive airport.

In both cases, the team’s winning argument in favor of corporate subsidy reads the same: The return you reap will be worth the dollars you sow.

Henderson’s council voted unanimously on Tuesday night to move forward toward a directed sale of land to the Raiders, a decision that allows city officials to use a Nevada law allowing no-bid sales at under-market prices when they deem it in the public interest.

000-seat domed stadium,The Raiders plan to spend as much as $75 million to construct their headquarters. The team’s oft-cited budget includes $1.8 billion for its 65, and $100 million for its corporate headquarters. Nevada’s $750 million taxpayer investment evolved from those estimates.

If the sale receives final council approval in February,000 per acre for the land. The team in May paid $77.5 million for 62 acres — $1.25 million per acre — to private owners for its stadium site, the Raiders will pay roughly $110, though that parcel sits in a much more desirable location adjacent to the Strip. The initial asking price for that land was $100 million.

Asked if the city initially offered the discounted rate or if the Raiders requested the half-price deal, “It was a negotiation. Of course they asked, city councilperson John Marz said, just like everybody else asked.”

The team plans to create 250 nonplaying jobs stationed at the headquarters, though many of those positions could be filled by employees relocating from the current Raiders home in Alameda. Raiders stadium consultant Don Webb said the facility will need to be completed by spring 2020 to accommodate team staff preparing for the upcoming NFL season later that year.

The Raiders awoke Dec. 10 in an enviable position. They were 6-6, yet still were tied with two teams for first place in the AFC West and about to play one of those teams,Authentic Alec Ogletree Jersey, with flaws already becoming evident, the Chiefs, whom they had beaten dramatically in October.

“It’s good stuff,” then-coach Jack Del Rio had said that week. “It’ll be exciting.”

It was anything but. The Raiders, fell behind 26-0 in an eventual 26-15 loss in Kansas City. In the postgame locker room, team radio voice Greg Papa said this week, Womens Trumaine Johnson Jersey, facing a critical moment in their season, the coaching staff laid into franchise quarterback Derek Carr. A visibly upset Carr would later take the blame while addressing reporters, saying the loss “sucked.”

The Raiders would not win another game in 2017,Authentic Mark Barron Jersey, and in the wake of Sunday’s finale, losing four in a row to end the season, not 20 minutes after a 30-10 loss to the Chargers, Del Rio was fired.

Carr told reporters that whoever the Raiders hire as their next

they’ve got a whole bunch of angry dudes that just want to fight.” But while Carr claimed the Raiders still possessed that fight in the last month,Womens Greg Zuerlein Jersey, head coach will inherit “a bunch of dogs. … Whoever comes in next, something else was missing.

we’ve got to hold each other accountable,“Without getting into too much detail,” he said. “In the littlest of things.”

Missed details dooming the Raiders was a theme all season. And while it may be partly true,Authentic Trumaine Johnson Jersey, the issues that led to a 6-10 finish were glaring.

The Raiders began the season amid heady optimism largely due to an offense that featured an ascending quarterback in Carr, but intriguing if Lynch could still run with physicality after a year off. The replacing of coordinator Bill Musgrave with Todd Downing was a gamble, a powerful and highly paid line and playmakers at receiver. The acquisition of Marshawn Lynch was a curiosity — part publicity stunt,Womens Johnny Hekker Jersey, given Musgrave’s sixth-ranked offense in 2016.

ranking 30th in plays from scrimmage. Downing drew heavy criticism in his first season as an NFL coordinator. Lynch and the offensive line did not appear to mesh until the second half of the season. Carr’s regression led to speculation on whether he fully recovered from a lower back fracture in Week 4,The result was a unit that fell back to 17th in the league in total offense and was frustratingly inconsistent,Authentic Johnny Hekker Jersey, or if he lost confidence during a trying season.

In Week 3 at Washington, were soundly beaten 27-10 in prime time. In November, Carr was sacked four times and threw two interceptions as the Raiders,Womens Rodger Saffold Jersey, general manager Reggie McKenzie recalled that game as “a punch to the gut” for the organization. “I don’t know about the confidence, who had started 2-0,” McKenzie said, “but it shook ’em. It shook all of us.”

It was the first of four consecutive losses, and the Raiders never seemed to regain the swagger they displayed for much of last season and up through a 45-20 win over the Jets in Week 2.

Poor defensive performance in the first half led to the firing after Week 11 of coordinator Ken Norton Jr., with Irvin later acknowledging Del Rio had allowed him time to move past the decision. Even as the defense improved under John Pagano, a move that angered some players. Bruce Irvin and Khalil Mack were both excused from practice the following day, players remained hesitant to discuss the improvement in order not to come off as criticizing Norton.

When Del Rio was fired Sunday, it came after he had already addressed the locker room. Del Rio then announced the news himself to reporters while many players learned of it on their phones or directly from the media.

” tight end Lee Smith said afterward. “There’s been so many disappointing things about this season that there’s no way to pinpoint one that took the cake. But at the end of the day it’s a production-based business,“We heard that he let you guys know, and we didn’t produce.”

Across the room, cornerback Sean Smith was asked what had gone wrong for the Raiders this season.

“I don’t know where to start, I’ll tell you that much. It wasn’t just one person or thing. It was a collection of things. It was just one of those years. I don’t know,” Smith said. “It was a whole lot of things, I can’t even speak too much about it. It was tough.”
