Ryan Mallett squandered a chance few were willing to take on him
ryan-mallett-squandered-a-chance-few-were-willing-to-take-on-him
HOUSTON -- During a weekly interview with Boston Mike Jenkins Authentic Jersey radio station WEEI, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was asked if Ryan Mallett was as big a "knucklehead" in New England as he has been in Houston, having missed a practice before the season and missed the team's charter flight to South Florida this past weekend. Brady paused for three seconds as he shook his head with a knowing look on his face (it's at about the 22-minute mark on this video). "I don't know," he said when he finally spoke, to laughter from others in the studio. "Ryan and I have always had a great relationship so it's -- you hate to see that stuff because that's not how it should be." Mallett spent three seasons with the New England Patriots, watched carefully by his organization. The Texans gave him a chance few would -- a chance to compete to be the team's starting quarterback. He's now squandered that opportunity, having been released by the Texans on Tuesday. The Patriots drafted him in the third Reggie Wayne Youth Jersey round after a tumultuous pre-draft period back in 2011. Some considered him a first-round talent, but teams worried about his attitude and had off-the-field concerns that knocked him down. Mallett missed a pre-draft meeting with the Carolina Panthers, who had the first overall pick that year. Then he watched as quarterbacks like Blaine Gabbert, Christian Ponder and Jake Locker got selected before him. The Patriots were seen as a team that could keep him in line. They made very clear to Mallett that if he ever was a problem, he'd be gone. And he generally wasn't while he was there. It offered hope for his future in the league, if he could get out from under Brady. Houston provided that chance. The Texans traded for him in August 2014, into an offense that he knew well. The Texans gave him a chance to win the starting job. The chance to start wasn't something he was going to get anywhere else. Teams can't release players after 4 p.m. Saturday, but had the Texans another option to back up Brian Hoyer, they might have done it in time. They stayed with him after he missed a http://www.nfl49ersofficialauthentic.com/Andy-Lee-Jersey practice (saying he overslept), two days after Hoyer initially won the starting job. They turned back to him after Hoyer struggled in the opener. Coach Bill O'Brien even said he thought Mallett learned from the incident. If he learned, the lessons didn't stick. The Texans couldn't wait for them to do so any longer.
