Sharks’ DeBoer explains Labanc’s demotion to Barracuda
a fall from a team’s top line to the AHL in a single night would secure a longterm reservation in the coach’s doghouse.,Under normal circumstances

his reassignment to the Barracuda Sunday isn’t a punishment from the Sharks braintrust. It’s a proactive attempt to keep him from falling into the type confidence-crippling slump that derailed his rookie campaign last winter.,Fortunately for Kevin Labanc

“Guys don’t look at it like that. Hopefully,” head coach Pete DeBoer said. “The message was: he’s done a lot of good stuff and he’s a big part of what we’re doing here down the road.”, Bancer’s smart enough to know that

After opening the season with three goals and six points in seven games, adidas Joe Pavelski jersey, general manager Doug Wilson informed Labanc that he would be joining the Barracuda for their clash with the Texas Stars Sunday., Labanc was dropped from Joe Pavelski and Joe Thornton left wing all the way down to the fourth line in the second period of the Sharks 2-1 shootout win over the Anaheim Ducks Saturday. Later that night

According to DeBoer, issues that tend to plague young players trying to make their way in the NHL., the Sharks weren’t displeased with Labanc’s compete level or his ability to play within the team’s structure

After winning the Ontario Hockey League’s scoring title in his last season of junior hockey, notching seven goals in his first 24 NHL games., Labanc set a high bar for himself as a 20-year-old rookie last winter

But once the calendar turned to 2017 in January, his production dried up as he scored just one goal over his last 31 games. When he finally snapped a 28-game goalless drought on April 4, he could be seen throwing an invisible monkey off his back on the Sharks bench, a sign of the pressure he was putting on himself to score goals.

DeBoer doesn’t want to write a sequel to last season’s narrative this winter.

“Last year,” the Sharks coach said. “He never got out of it and it affected his play, we kept going to the well for 25, 30 games and I think it was detrimental to him, arguably, maybe, the rest of the season. I didn’t want to make that mistake again.”

The Sharks are hoping that a trip to the AHL can give Labanc the type of confidence boost that reignited Chris Tierney’s season in 2015-16.

After Tierney struggled under similar circumstances that winter, collecting two points in three games., the Sharks sent him to the Barracuda for a two-game conditioning assignment in January and he melted the ice

playing a key role in the team’s run to the Stanley Cup Final.,He returned to the Sharks with a reborn mindset

“This league is all about coming down and getting your mojo back, he came down played two,” Barracuda coach Roy Sommer said after the Barracuda’s 6-1 win Sunday. “When they did it with Tierney, scored (three) points, three games, and went back up and he went on a tear.”

To his credit, his line combined to produce seven points and he was all over the puck throughout the game., Labanc didn’t allow his demotion to impact his performance with the Barracuda Sunday. He helped set up two goals

“Just because you got sent down, don’t feel sorry for yourself. Instead, make a statement,” Labanc said after Sunday’s game. “Let them know you’re going to play hard no matter what.”

It’s this type of attitude that has DeBoer convinced that Labanc’s reassignment to the Barracuda is just a temporary move. He still sees Labanc as a key part of the Sharks blueprint this season.

get some confidence again, adidas Evgeni Malkin jersey,“He’s going to go down there, hopefully, start feeling the puck and be back up here soon,” DeBoer said.

Defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic participated in the Sharks full practice Monday, skating with his longtime partner, Justin Braun, in every drill. He also competed in the Sharks heated three-on-three half-court tournament.

Vlasic, who suffered a concussion in the Sharks bout with the Nashville Predators on Nov. 1, is still considered to be day to day because of the unpredictable nature of head injuries. Oftentimes, players with concussions experience setbacks upon physical exertion.

” DeBoer said. “Obviously,“He’s feeling good, looks good, it’s how you react to the strenuous exercise, but everything looks positive.”

Defenseman Paul Martin participated in his second full practice Monday since he experienced a setback in his recovery from offseason ankle surgery in a game on Oct. 7.

but Saturday’s home game against the Vancouver Canucks looks like a possibility.,Martin isn’t expecting to suit up for the Sharks showdown with the Tampa Lightning at SAP Center Wednesday

“I don’t think it’ll be Wednesday, but after a week of practice, I should feel good enough to play,” the veteran blue liner said.

Martin Jones was named the NHL’s third star of the week Monday.

Jones went 3-0 on the week with a .938 save percentage and a 1.30 goals-against average.

It’s just a written test,Authentic Jakub Voracek jersey, I’d have to be in a coma. … The baseline cannot show how I’m feeling.”,” Vlasic said of the written exam that took him about 45 minutes to complete. “In order for me to fail that

” Vlasic later added.,“I could easily do it if I’m concussed

All signs point to Vlasic being able to return for Wednesday’s game against the Tampa Bay Lightning at SAP Center after a one-game absence. Vlasic suffered the head injury in the third period of the Sharks’ game against the Nashville Predators on a check by Ryan Johansen.

including Tuesday’s roughly 45-minute skate.,Authentic Phil Kessel jersey,Vlasic said he took the post-concussion baseline test last weekend and passed it with “flying colors.” He’s been a full participant in practice the last two days

they are given similar tests to see if their scores are the same or if there has been loss in mental function.,The concussion baseline program begins with players being tested at the start of training camp when they are healthy. Post-concussion

Vlasic insisted he won’t suit up Wednesday unless he’s healthy enough to play. He understands the long-term risks of playing with a head injury.,Authentic Mario Lemieux jersey,Despite his critique of the test

but if you get hit again,Authentic Sidney Crosby jersey,“It’s being honest with yourself,” Vlasic said. “Everybody wants to play, you might not play for the rest of your life. So, the test is just a guideline.”

as Brenden Dillon assumed a spot on the Sharks’ second defense pair with Justin Braun in San Jose’s 2-1 shootout win. Joakim Ryan remained on a pair with Brent Burns and Dylan DeMelo was inserted into the lineup with Tim Heed.,Vlasic missed Saturday’s game against the Anaheim Ducks

Vlasic said slept fine the night of the incident and did not have to go to the hospital. He has felt normal since he began to skate again on Saturday.

“Do I feel fortunate it wasn’t worse? No. Do I feel unlucky that it happened? Yes, it could have been worse. I don’t start playing those games.,” Vlasic said. “It could have been better

some guys it lasts two years. Some guys are still not playing because of it.”,“It’s not a broken bone where it’s a certain amount of time. Some guys it last two days

Asked what he makes of the NHL’s concussion protocol, Vlasic said, adidas Sidney Crosby jersey, “It’s great. It’s what the league wanted, so it must be great.”

South Korea,Keep in mind, Vlasic has recently criticized the NHL for its decision to skip the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, and its crackdown on slashing, suggesting it’s a cheap way to increase scoring. His praise of the league’s concussion protocol seemed to come with a pinch of sarcasm.

If Vlasic plays Wednesday, who have combined for 62 points in 15 games., he and Braun will likely be matched up against the Lightning’s top line of center Steven Stamkos and wingers Nikita Kucherov and Vladislav Namestnikov

but Sharks coach Pete DeBoer said he expects Thornton to play against the Lightning.,? Center Joe Thornton was given a maintenance day Tuesday and did not practice. Thornton also left Monday’s practice early and did not take part in the team’s three-on-three tournament

? Forward Jannik Hansen, a healthy scratch for the last six games, might return to the lineup against the Lightning. Hansen skated on the Sharks’ fourth line Tuesday with Barclay Goodrow and Joel Ward. With Thornton out, Ryan Carpenter skated on the Sharks’ top line with Joe Pavelski and Joonas Donskoi.

and that’s probably a generous assessment.,adidas Sidney Crosby jersey,The Sharks might find a way to replace Patrick Marleau’s offensive production with an internal group effort. The chances of finding a one-to-one replacement for Mr. Shark on the trade market are slim

As Marleau and Joe Thornton headed toward unrestricted free agency last summer, a common narrative being spun around town was that it was time for the Sharks to move on. Things were getting stale. The Sharks needed to let at least one, if not both, of the future Hall of Famers walk to free up the cap space to bring in another all-star caliber player to lead the franchise into the future.

The Ottawa Senators blockbuster trade for Matt Duchene over the weekend shows what it takes and how challenging it can be to acquire franchise players on the market in the modern NHL.

“They’re hard to replace,” head coach Pete DeBoer said. “And even more importantly, too. We had one leave, Patty Marleau. Those guys that play at that level, it’s a short list, or top-two defensemen, centermen. They’re like goaltenders, it’s hard to find, but you have to have them.

they’re all deep up the middle.”,“You look at the teams that win at the end of the day

Colorado Avalanche general manager Joe Sakic faced heavy criticism for demanding such a steep price for Duchene and waiting more than a year to pull the trigger on a deal. In the end, 42, a 2018 second-round pick and a 2019 third-round pick., he won a king’s ransom, acquiring prospects Samuel Girard (No. 47, 2016), Vladislav Kamenev (No, 2014) and Shane Bowers (No. 28, 2017), goalie Andrew Hammond, and a conditional 2018 first-round pick

The Senators, their top pick from the 2017 NHL Draft (Bowers), who worked out a three-way deal with the Nashville Predators to acquire Duchene, gave up a top-six center in Kyle Turris, a conditional first-round pick (2018), a third-round pick (2019) and Hammond, who led them into the Stanley Cup playoffs in 2014-15 by going 20-1-2 down the stretch with a 1.79 goals-against average and a .941 save percentage.

last year’s first-round pick,The trade is basically the equivalent of the Sharks giving up Tomas Hertl, Chris Tierney, this year’s first-round pick, a third-round pick and Aaron Dell or Troy Grosenick to obtain Duchene’s services.

I threw Tierney into the mix because Turris has achieved a lot more than Hertl at the NHL level with three seasons of 20 or more goals and 50 or more points. He also doesn’t have Hertl’s history of knee injuries.

the only thing that comes to mind is Dana Carvey’s impression of former-President George H.W. Bush on Saturday Night Live: “not gonna do it.”,Looking at that price tag

if there’s one general manager in the salary cap era with a track record of acquiring franchise-caliber players without giving up the house it’s Doug Wilson.,2. With all that being said

In the last 11 years, adidas Jakub Voracek jersey, Wayne Primeau,Authentic Evgeni Malkin jersey, he’s brought in a Hart Trophy winner in Thornton, a Norris Trophy winner in Brent Burns and quite possibly a future-Vezina Trophy winner in Martin Jones. He obtained this trio of all stars for Marco Sturm, Devin Setoguchi, Sean Kuraly and a pair of first-round picks., Brad Stuart, adidas Mario Lemieux jersey, Charlie Coyle

Does Wilson have anymore trick cards left in his deck?

they’ll need to give up a young defenseman. Everyone needs blue line depth and that’s a position of strength for the Sharks right now.,3. If the Sharks are going to pull off a trade for a scoring forward this season
