Three things to know: Sharks’ Thornton receives ‘great honor’ from his hometown

Three things to know: Sharks’ Thornton receives ‘great honor’ from his hometown
three-things-to-know-sharks’-thornton-receives-‘great-honor’-from-his-hometown
Instead of being called the Timken Community Centre, an homage to the face of the Sharks franchise who grew up playing minor hockey in the Southern Ontario city, the rink in St. Thomas will now be known as the Joe Thornton Community Center, which is roughly 100 miles south of Toronto.

“What an honor, it really is,” Thornton said. “I never expected it. I never even thought about it. I’m proud of where I’m from and I couldn’t be happier.”

the manufacturing company the rink was previously named after.,Ironically, Thornton’s grandfather on his mother’s side, spent a large chunk of his life working for Timken Canada, Murray Pell

” Thornton said.,adidas Claude Giroux jersey,“My grandfather actually worked at the Timken plant with his World War II buddies for over 40 years and then it just got torn down recently

The Timken Canada plant, closed its doors in April 2013 after serving as a landmark in St. Thomas for 67 years. The rink’s official renaming will take place in a ceremony over the summer when Thornton can be present with his family., which manufactured auto parts

Wayne and Mary, Steve Barber, adidas Shayne Gostisbehere jersey, his cousin, and a touching piece about his relationship with childhood friend,The renaming was announced Sunday when St. Thomas was featured on Rogers Hometown Hockey on Sportsnet in Canada. The show featured interviews with Thornton’s parents, adidas Nolan Patrick jersey, former-Shark Scott Thornton, who suffers from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).

Thornton said the renaming of the rink is particularly gratifying for his parents.

so they couldn’t be happier.”,“They love it, they still live there,” he said. “They’re obviously a big part of that community

2. Ryan Carpenter looks to play with an edge after getting his number called.

Carpenter provided an honest description of his experience serving as a healthy scratch in the Sharks last seven games.

“Not playing sucks, adidas Sidney Crosby jersey, who will center the Sharks (10-8-1) fourth line against the Arizona Coyotes (5-15-3) at the Gila River Arena in Glendale Wednesday.,” said Carpenter

“I’ve been just trying to stay ready and just keep working hard.”

opposite Kevin Labanc. Jannik Hansen will serve as a healthy scratch and Melker Karlsson is recovering from a day-to-day injury.,The 26-year-old center is expected to skate on a line with Mikkel Boedker and Joel Ward. Danny O’Regan will move from the fourth line center position to Chris Tierney’s right wing

Carpenter will see action for the first time since Nov. 1 after skating in 10-consecutive games. Head coach Pete DeBoer wants him to play with more of an edge this time around.

” the Sharks coach said. “You’ve got to know that you’re out there against that guy.”,“We’re asking all of our guys to be harder to play against and that’s got to be a part of his game

who’s eager to show what he can bring to the team after spending three weeks in the press box.,Authentic Joe Thornton jersey,Playing with energy shouldn’t be a problem for Carpenter

“I’m just ready to get out there and start battling again,” Carpenter said., competing again

Defenseman Dylan DeMelo will also rejoin the lineup, who will be serving as a healthy scratch after failing to produce a shot on goal against the Anaheim Ducks Monday., suiting up for just his second game since Oct. 7. DeMelo will be replacing Tim Heed

3. Coyotes record is ‘really misleading’.

The Coyotes are entering Wednesday’s game with the NHL’s fewest points (13) after becoming the first team in league history to open a season without a regulation win in its first 20 games.

” especially when the team is heading into the game with three-consecutive wins after playing all but one of their last eight contests on the road.,But DeBoer said the Coyotes record is “really misleading

“You make a big mistake if you look at their record, so we’ve got our hands full here.”,” the Sharks coach said. “They’re a real dangerous team

Goaltending is a major reason why the Coyotes struggled so much over the first 20 games of the season. The teams ranks 29th in save percentage (.904) as Louis Domingue, struggled mightily while Antti Raanta was sidelined by a lower-body injury from Oct. 14 to Nov. 2., who was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning last week

The Coyotes are also running into some tough puck luck in the offensive zone, scoring 11 goals in their last three games., ranking 26th in shooting percentage (7 percent). But they’ve been finding the net recently

” DeBoer said. “So it’s going to be on us to take them out of that rhythm.”,“Once you start feeling that confidence and that mojo, especially when you’ve got young-talented guys, Authentic Sidney Crosby jersey,or without pressure.. you’re obviously a different team, and you start playing without thinking too much

Antoine Vermette made sure Reto Berra had a memorable first start with Anaheim.

Vermette beat goalie Martin Jones in the ninth round of a long shootout to give the Ducks a 3-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Monday night.

Cam Fowler and Brandon Montour also scored during the tiebreaker for Anaheim.,Corey Perry

Joonas Donskoi, leaving Vermette a chance to win it., Tim Heed and Brent Burns had shootout goals for the Sharks. Tomas Hertl missed his attempt in the ninth round

changed sides and saw how he was going to react.",adidas Sidney Crosby jersey,"I tried to change pace," Vermette said. "I started a little quicker and then I slowed down, change direction

Perry and Rickard Rakell scored in regulation for the Ducks. Berra made 40 saves in his first start of the season.

since I played my last game, I stayed big, I felt really good in practice and the same in the game, but after that I got better and better into the game. I stayed calm,"The last two weeks," Berra said. "It was a tough start and good chance that they scored (on), and so I'm really happy."

including the tying score in the third period. Jones stopped 28 shots.,Donskoi had two goals for the Sharks

" Sharks captain Joe Pavelski said. "It was a big night for him. He stepped up. You could see right from the start he had legs and he wanted to play the puck.","He's one of the guys who has driven this team

Donskoi helped create his own goal by knocking the puck away from a Ducks defender and getting it to Logan Couture for a give-and-go as the Sharks took a 1-0 lead 3:31 into the game.

Montour sent a sharp pass to Perry's stick. Perry settled it and fired into the net for the equalizer.,The Ducks came back in the second period to even the score 45 seconds in. After winning a faceoff in the San Jose zone

Rakell gave the Ducks a 2-1 advantage midway through the second, and Rakell knocked it into the net before Jones could cover up.,Authentic Shayne Gostisbehere jersey, just as a power play ended. Perry took a shot that bounced off Jones' pads

"Our goaltender made some big stops and got us to overtime and made a couple more in overtime, we scored one more than they did."," Anaheim coach Randy Carlyle said. "And obviously the shootout

The Sharks snapped an 0-for-17 streak on the power play with a goal midway through the third to tie it. Donskoi tracked down a rebound and flipped it off Berra's right pad and into the net for his second career multi-goal game.

"It felt good to get a power-play goal, a lot of young guys who have a chance to play a bigger role.",Authentic Nolan Patrick jersey,Authentic Sidney Crosby jersey," Donskoi said. "We haven't been so good on the power play. We've got a lot of good players in this room

with a total of 11 during that span. ... The Sharks scored their second power-play goal in eight November games.,NOTES: Ducks D Cam Fowler returned to action after missing 12 games with a knee injury. ... Sharks C Melker Karlsson missed the game with an upper-body injury. ... Sharks forward Kevin Labanc, started on the top line with Joe Thornton and Joe Pavelski. Donskoi was moved to the second line. ... Ducks G Ryan Miller missed the game with a lower-body injury. Berra made his fourth appearance this season. ... Perry has seven points in his last five games. ... Rakell has a point in seven of his past eight games,Authentic Jake Guentzel jersey, who hasn't played much recently

The message for the San Jose Sharks' prospects was quite clear this offseason.

After general manager opted not to re-sign Patrick Marleau, it was readily apparent the Sharks would need to rely on their young players to fill any holes., or sign any free agents of consequence

that youth movement is underway. Five first or second-year players will suit up at SAP Center Monday night against Anaheim. ,Before the quarter mark of the season

the infusion is due to injury, adidas Jake Guentzel jersey,Partially, as Barclay Goodrow, and Paul Martin are all on the mend. But as the season wears on, Melker Karlsson, adidas Joe Thornton jersey, the young players' presence is becoming a necessity.

Joakim Ryan looks like a natural fit alongside Brent Burns, and Danny O'Regan assisted San Jose's lone goal in his season debut on Saturday. , and the Sharks are a decidedly better puck possession team with him on the ice than when he's not. Tim Heed leads Sharks defensemen in scoring

according to the Bay Area News Group's Curtis Pashelka.,That assist set up the goal that ended Timo Meier's drought, and he looks primed to break out: he's third on the team in five-on-five shots despite playing the ninth-fewest five-on-five minutes this season, but is still tied for sixth on the team in scoring and skated on the top line at Monday's morning skate, according to Corsica Hockey.  Kevin Labanc's cooled off since his scorching start

There's still room for improvement, of course. Labanc and Meier could stand to score more, too. , but the same can be said about most everyone else. Ryan's made his fair share of mistakes, but Burns has struggled plenty of times alongside him

So the young players are fitting in, even if all of them aren't necessarily standing out. That shouldn't come as too much of a surprise.

Meier's the only first-round pick of the lot, but he's also only been able to legally buy a beer for a month. Ryan and Heed have made the best adjustment, and thus have the most professional experience. , in no small part because they're the oldest (24 and 26, respectively) of the Barracuda call-ups

Of course, fitting in isn't necessarily a bad thing. It is, when that's what many other players on the roster are doing. , however, far from ideal

Having all of their young players stand out is what will ultimately make the Sharks stand out from the rest of the pack. It hasn't quite happened yet, and San Jose's one of 22 teams separated by six points or fewer.
